Grossglockner without the toll: which summer cards include alpine roads
The Grossglockner toll is €46.50 per car. Which summer cards include it, and which one gives you free panoramic roads in Carinthia instead.

The Grossglockner High Alpine Road (Großglockner Hochalpenstraße) is one of the most beautiful roads in the Alps, and for many travellers a stop on the way to their holiday. The toll is not cheap, though: €46.50 per car per day (summer 2026). Some summer cards include it, others only give a discount, and others cover different alpine roads.
How much the Grossglockner toll costs in 2026
| Vehicle | Day ticket |
|---|---|
| Car | €46.50 |
| Electric car | €40 |
| Car after 6 pm | €36.50 |
| Motorbike | €36.50 |
The road is open from late April to early November (in 2026 from 25 April), in summer daily from about 5:30 am to 9 pm. Discounts cannot be combined; the evening rate, for example, cannot be combined with a guest card.
Nationalpark SommerCard: Grossglockner included
With the Nationalpark SommerCard from the Hohe Tauern National Park region you get one day ticket for the Grossglockner per stay, for a car or a motorbike. You also get a day ticket for the Gerlos Alpine Road and access to the toll road to Kolm-Saigurn.
Conditions that are easy to miss:
- Everyone in the car must have the card and show it at the toll booth. Each passenger without a card pays €8 extra.
- The card is valid at the Fusch and Heiligenblut toll booths. The round trip via the Felbertauernstraße is not included.
- You get the card free from the first night at partner accommodation; it cannot be bought.
- Note its main rule: one attraction a day is included. A day on the Grossglockner therefore also “uses up” your cable car for that day.
Kärnten Card: only a discount on the Grossglockner, but four other roads free
The Kärnten Card gives you only €4 off the Grossglockner for a car (€3 for a motorbike). But four panoramic roads in Carinthia are included:
- Nockalmstraße (34 km) in the Nockberge Biosphere Park,
- Malta-Hochalmstraße (14.4 km) up to the Kölnbrein dam,
- Villacher Alpenstraße (16.5 km) above Villach,
- Goldeck Panoramastraße (14.5 km).
The Kärnten Card is a card you buy; anyone can get one regardless of where they stay: €69 a week for an adult and €37 for a child in high season. More in our article on the Kärnten Card.
Other alpine roads with a card
- The Silvretta High Alpine Road is toll-free with the Silvretta Card Premium (Ischgl, Galtür and surroundings). In 2026, however, it is only open as far as the Bielerhöhe and Vermuntsee.
- The Kaunertal Glacier Road is among the services of the Pitztal Summer Card, including the Karlesjochbahn cable car.
- The toll road into the Karwendel valleys is included in the AchenseeCard.
Is the Nationalpark SommerCard worth it for the Grossglockner?
A family of four in one car saves the whole day ticket, i.e. €46.50, with the Nationalpark SommerCard. The condition is that all four have the card, which is automatic at partner accommodation. With the Kärnten Card they save only €4. If you only drive over the Grossglockner on the way to your holiday and don’t stay in the Hohe Tauern region, you won’t have the card and will pay the full price.
How to plan your day on the Grossglockner
- Allow a full day. The road is 48 km long, and with stops at the viewpoints you’ll spend most of the day on it. The day ticket covers that.
- Main stops: Edelweißspitze (2,571 m), the highest viewpoint on the road; Hochtor (2,504 m), the highest point of the crossing; Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe with views of the Grossglockner (3,798 m) and the Pasterze glacier.
- Set off early. In the morning there are fewer people at the toll gates and car parks, and the peaks are more often free of cloud.
- Check the weather. The road can close after snowfall even in summer. Current status and webcams are on the road’s official website.
- With the Nationalpark SommerCard, save the Grossglockner for a day when you don’t need a cable car. The card covers one attraction per day.
Summary
Only the Nationalpark SommerCard includes the Grossglockner, once per stay and only if everyone in the car has it. The Kärnten Card gives €4 off the Grossglockner but includes four other panoramic roads in Carinthia. The Silvretta High Alpine Road and the Kaunertal Glacier Road are included in the Silvretta Card Premium and the Pitztal Summer Card. Compare all cards in the catalogue.
