- The Westgipfelbahn takes you from Hinterglemm up to the western summit of the Schattberg at around 2,100 m.
- Follow the ridge on to the Stemmerkogel (2,123 m), over the Seetörl saddle and up the Saalbachkogel (2,092 m). Sheep graze on the grassy slopes.
- From the Saalbachkogel you descend to the Hacklberger lakes and the Hacklbergalm. The descent is steep, so take care.
- From the hut the path climbs back up to the Westgipfelbahn top station. Allow 4.5 hours of walking in total.

Saalbach explicitly recommends sturdy shoes and poles because of the steep descent.
For experienced hikers: Pinzgauer Spaziergang
From the Schattberg the famous Pinzgauer Spaziergang ridge trail runs to the Schmittenhöhe above Zell am See (17 km, about 6 h). You ride down to Zell am See by lift (paid separately) and return to Saalbach on bus 680.

Saalbach's lifts have a family bonus: the second child pays half, so we count half a child ticket less for the family.
