Route description

  1. The large panoramic cabin of the Ahornbahn takes you from Mayrhofen up to the Ahorn plateau at about 1,950 m.
  2. From the top station walk past the Ahornsee swimming lake, after which you enter the Zillertal Alps nature park. The path crosses heathland and opens up views of the valley from Mayrhofen northwards.
  3. After a bend on the slope of the Filzenkogel the path climbs gently. At the junction take path no. 42 via the upper Fellenbergalm pasture.
  4. The last stretch to the Karl-von-Edel-Hütte zigzags up a steep slope. The hut stands at 2,238 m right below the Ahornspitze (2,973 m).
  5. Return the same way. In the upper part you can take path no. 514 for a change.

Good to know

A reward for the children

At the top station is the AlbertAdler adventure world with a small lake, playground and trail. A good way to finish before riding down.

High-mountain terrain

You are above 1,950 m the whole time. Bring sturdy shoes and a jacket and watch the forecast, as afternoon thunderstorms are common here in summer.

Hut

The Edelhütte is an Alpine Club hut with a kitchen. Check its opening times on its website before you go.

For experienced hikers

From the Edelhütte a waymarked path leads up the Ahornspitze (2,973 m). That is a demanding summit hike with about another 735 m of climbing.

Why “moderate”

Red mountain trail: narrow path, steep in places, needs sure footing. The source rates it as easy. We put it one grade higher because the final section follows a narrow path on a steep slope.
