Route description

  1. In Mayrhofen take the Penkenbahn gondola up. The valley station is right in the centre, near the Mayrhofen Penkenbahn bus stop.
  2. From the top station walk west on the panorama loop (PanoramaRundWeg). The wide path passes the Pilzbar restaurant and the Lärchwaldhütte hut, with views down to Mayrhofen.
  3. A gentle climb takes you to the Penkenjochhaus at around 2,080 m, the highest point of the loop. On a clear day you can see into the Tux valley and the peaks of the Zillertal Alps.
  4. The way back passes the reservoir and the Granatkapelle chapel and runs above the Penkenalm and Granatalm huts to the Penkenbahn top station. The loop is about 8 km.

Good to know

Off-road pushchair only

The loop is listed as pushchair-friendly, but these are gravel mountain paths with climbs. Bring an off-road pushchair with large wheels; a city buggy won't do.

Only one lift

The Activcard covers one lift up and down per day. That's why the loop ends at the Penkenbahn. If you rode down to Finkenberg on the Finkenberger Almbahnen, you would pay for that descent separately.

Shorter option

Walk only to the Penkenjochhaus and back the same way, or stay at the playground by the top station.

Food

Along the way are the Pilzbar, Lärchwaldhütte, Penkenjochhaus, Granatalm and other huts. No need to carry a packed lunch.

Why “easy”
