Schladming with kids in summer: which attractions for which age

Schladming with kids in summer: Hopsiland, Rittisberg, Hochwurzen, Reiteralm and the Dachstein by age, what the Schladming-Dachstein Card covers and a week plan.

Family with two children on a path above Schladming, a gondola overhead and the Dachstein in the distance

The Schladming-Dachstein region is one of the best summer destinations for families in Austria. Above Schladming and Ramsau there are five family mountains with playgrounds, an alpine coaster and mountain go-karts, plus the Dachstein glacier. With the Schladming-Dachstein Card from your partner accommodation, one cable car a day is included. Here is an overview of where to go by your children’s age and how to fit the outings into a week. Prices are for summer 2026.

Overview: where to go by age

Outing Who for With the card Without, family of four
Hopsiland Planai 1–10, pushchair lift included lift €98
Rittisberg 3–14 lift and lake included lift €58
Hochwurzen with mountain go-karts 6–15 lift included, go-karts discounted go-karts €121
Reiteralm 2–12, pushchair lift included lift €92
Dachstein glacier school-age and teens once from two nights, attractions extra lift €183
Geisterberg (trip into Salzburger Land) 2–12 not in the card €123

A family of four means two adults and children aged 8 and 11.

Toddlers and preschoolers (under 6)

  • Hopsiland Planai is the first choice for the youngest. The playground is right at the top station at 1,830 m, two 2 km loops are pushchair-friendly, and a free inclined lift handles the climb between them. In the rain, the Kasalm hut with its indoor marble run helps.
  • Rittisberg in Ramsau: a playground at the top station, the alpine coaster with a parent from age 3, and down below the Ramsau Beach swimming lake, free with the card.
  • Reiteralm above Pichl: the Preunegg Jet gondola (without the card €29 adult, €17 child), a pushchair loop and a children’s playground.

School-age children (6–12)

  • Rittisberg Coaster: children ride alone from age 8 and 1.35 m. In July and August you pay (child €8.50); in spring and autumn one ride is included with the card.
  • Mountain go-karts on the Hochwurzen: the ride to the valley takes 20 to 30 minutes. Children may steer themselves from age 10 and 1.45 m; smaller ones ride with a parent. With the card a ride costs €25 (adults and children who drive themselves), without it €39.50 and €31.50. Passengers up to age 9 ride free with the card.
  • High ropes course and Flyline at the Rittisberg from 1.15 m.
  • Reiteralm: kids’ bike trails (Junior Trails) and the Goas Steigl via ferrata for children and beginners. From the top station it is about 40 minutes to the Spiegelsee lake.
  • Day trip to the Geisterberg in St. Johann-Alpendorf, about an hour by car: ghost castle, water play, tractor train. Not in the card; more in Geisterberg Alpendorf.

Older children and teenagers

  • Dachstein glacier at 2,700 m. The glacier lift is included once if you stay at least two nights with the same host. Without the card a return ride costs €61 (adult), €46 (youth, born 2008–2010) and €30.50 (child). The card does not cover the attractions at the top, the suspension bridge, ice palace and Stairway to Nothingness: a family of four pays €42 for them. Even in summer it can be around freezing at the top; more in Glacier in summer with a card.
  • Bikepark Schladming on the Planai: the blue Flowline runs from the top station at 1,830 m down to the valley, about 16 km. How bike transport works with summer cards is explained in Bike transport by cable car.
  • Large ropes course tour at the Rittisberg from 1.40 m and the mountain go-karts, which younger siblings may not yet steer themselves.

Planning a week with one lift per day

The Schladming-Dachstein Card gives one cable car ride per day in total, not one per mountain. So plan one mountain per day:

Day Outing
1 (arrival, card valid from 13:00) swimming, a stroll in Schladming or Ramsau
2 Hopsiland Planai
3 Dachstein glacier (you now have two nights), in clear weather
4 Rittisberg, Ramsau Beach in the afternoon
5 Hochwurzen with go-karts or Reiteralm
6 free day or the Geisterberg in Salzburger Land
7 Planai again for the second Hopsiland loop

Do the glacier as early as possible once you have two nights. If the weather turns, you still have spare days.

How much a family saves with the card

On the lifts in the table and the lake alone, a family of four saves in a week: Planai €98, Rittisberg €58, Ramsau Beach €18, go-karts €46 (the card cuts the family price from €121 to €75), Dachstein glacier €183 and Reiteralm €92. That is almost €500, even after paying €42 for the glacier attractions. You get the card free from the first night. How to find a property that issues it is covered in Schladming accommodation with the summer card.

Our experience

We have three small children, and in the Schladming-Dachstein region we discovered that mountains with kids don’t have to be a compromise. Our children love Hopsiland, the Rittisberg and the Geisterberg, and every outing is an adventure they look forward to. Places like these mean the whole family enjoys the mountains: the kids get their adventure, and we parents enjoy the views and fresh air instead of coaxing them to walk just a little further.

Summary

For families with small children, Hopsiland on the Planai and the Rittisberg in Ramsau are the best picks in Schladming; for school-age kids the alpine coaster and the go-karts on the Hochwurzen; for teenagers the Dachstein glacier and the bike park.
