Austria with kids in summer: where to go and which card saves you the most
Summer cards compared for families: price for a family of four, age limits, kids' clubs and pools included. Where to go in Austria with children in summer.

A summer holiday in Austria with children gets expensive mainly because of cable cars: a family buys four tickets for every mountain. A summer card cuts that cost to zero or to a few dozen euros a week. We worked out which cards pay off most for families, using verified price lists for the 2026 season.
What a family of four pays for a week
Example family: two adults, children aged 8 and 11, 7 nights, a bought card for 6 days.
| Card | How you get it | Price for the family |
|---|---|---|
| JOKER CARD Saalbach, HochkönigCard, Alpbachtal Card and others | free with accommodation | €0 |
| Super.Sommer.Card Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis | fee per night | €175 |
| Lech Card Sommer | bought, children under 14 free | €210 |
| Kärnten Card | bought | €212 |
| Zell am See-Kaprun Summer Card | fee per night | €227.22 |
| Zillertal Activcard | bought, family discount | €274 |
| SalzburgerLand Card | bought | €310 |
| Kitzbüheler Alpen Summer Card | bought | €395 |
The catalogue calculates the price for your family (other ages, number of nights): set your group on the left and the cards are sorted from cheapest.
Up to what age children travel free
Age limits differ between cards, and for young children they decide the price:
- Lech Card: children under 14 (born 2012 or later) free if a parent has a Lech Card.
- Zillertal Activcard: with two adult cards, children born 2011 or later travel free. Without the family discount, children born 2020 or later are free.
- Super.Sommer.Card and Kärnten Card: children born 2020 or later free.
- Zell am See-Kaprun: no contribution for children under 5.
- Kitzbüheler Alpen Summer Card: children born 2022 or later free.
- SalzburgerLand Card: free only under 4. From the third child (aged 4–15) the card is free.
- JOKER CARD Saalbach: children born 2022 or later do not get their own card and travel with an adult.
Cards with a programme for children
For families it is not just about cable cars. Look for cards that add pools and children’s activities:
- Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis: the Murmli Club (Serfaus) and Mini&Maxi Club (Fiss and Ladis) kids’ clubs from age 3, plus all cable cars with unlimited rides.
- Saalbach Hinterglemm: Käpt’n Hook adventure pool, mini golf, adventure golf, a water playground and the Montelino adventure trail, all free with the JOKER CARD.
- Lech: a children’s programme on weekdays and a family programme, a forest swimming pool and an hour of bowling.
- Zillertal: six outdoor pools, one entry every day.
- Zell am See-Kaprun: lake lidos, an indoor pool and boats.
Where to go in Austria by children’s age
With small children under 6, consider a card that is free with accommodation and has unlimited cable cars. With a small child you rarely manage more than one mountain a day, but an unlimited card lets you go back down whenever you need to. Good choices are the JOKER CARD Saalbach or the HochkönigCard.
With school-age children, cards where children pay nothing even on the bought version pay off: the Zillertal Activcard with its family discount or the Lech Card. If you want a kids’ club so the parents can do a longer hike, you will find one in Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis.
With teenagers, watch the age limits: on many cards 16-year-olds count as adults. The Kitzbüheler Alpen Summer Card has a separate, cheaper youth rate (born 2008–2010).
Summary
Families save the most with a card that is free with accommodation. If you stay elsewhere, the cheapest bought cards are the Lech Card, the Kärnten Card and the Zillertal Activcard with its family discount. Set up your family in the card catalogue or compare selected cards in the comparison.
